Plot

Catherine Dollanganger, protagonist and narrator, is taken with her siblings  to live  at an old family estate in Virginia after her father's death.



Catherine L. Dollanganger

Cathy is the nickname of Catherine Leigh Dollanganger who is  the novel’s protagonist and narrator.  She spent most of her childhood in Gladstone, Pennsylvania before moving to The Foxworth Hall estate in Virginia.  The character’s life drastically and painfully changes throughout the novel due to the hostility that she and her siblings encounter at Foxworth Hall. She describes herself as  a  person who doubts everything.

Christopher Dollanganger, Jr.

Chris is the oldest of the Dollanganger siblings and an aspiring doctor, like Cathy, Chris is  an avid reader. He  is more inclined to accept his room arrest than his siblings due to the strong bond that he shares with his mother.

Cory Dollanganger

Cory is Carrie's twin brother. Cory has a  premature and natural talent for music which he discovers one day in the attic at Foxworth Hall. He is described by Cathy as a boy with a sensitive nature. He also looks for comfort in Cathy's love.  He has a pet named Mickey.

Carrie Dollanganger

Carrie is Cory's twin sister, a very happy spirited girl, but due to her traumatic experience at Foxworth Hall, she changes from being a talkative, vivacious girl to someone trapped in mutism and sadness for her twin brother's death.

 Corrine Dollanganger (nee Foxworth)

She is the daughter of Malcom Foxworth, and Chirstopher Dollanganger, Sr.'s wife. She is notorious for killing her son Cory.  

Malcom Foxworth

Corrine's father, and Christopher, Sr.'s half brother, a religious fanatic whose death the Dollanganger siblings think as their future freedom.

Olivia Foxworth

Malcom Foxworth's wife, also a religious fanatic,  who the Dollanganger siblings refer to as the "grandmother" .

Christopher Dollanganger, Sr.

He is Malcom Foxworth's half brother, Corrine Dollanganger's husband, and the Dollanganger's siblings father. After his death in a car accident, Corrine takes the children to live in her parent's estate.  Cathy has a strong bond with her father and  at a later point in the novel, she sees him again in a dream.

Bartholomew Winslow

Young handsome lawyer and Corrine's second husband.
